The DataMovil Server offers complementary services to the client capacities, adding value to the product. The main components of the server are:

• Access control



This module is used to define users, groups of users and the right to download single application. Therefore, it is possible that in one DataMovil server coexist users with different profiles.



• Application and versions publication management



This module controls which applications are available for downloading by the users and the different versions of one application. As the developers finish an application, it is sent to the DataMovil Server where it is stored in an invalid state which implies that it is only visible to the server administrator. He or she can check it and whenever it is ready for production deployment, it is validated and becomes available to the end users for downloading.



• Integration with relational databases



As all data communication in DataMovil is made in XML format, the integration with relational databases is straightforward. There are in the market a large number of products that realize this integration. Many of them are open source. They are based on defining a mapping between the XML elements and tables fields. DataMovil delivery incorporates a very simple product to relalize this mapping for flat XML structures although there are many others in the market.



• Data management



The DataMovil client may use data stored in XML structures in a file. The access to the file can be made local to the device or remote to a server. Moreover, DataMovil incorporates capacities to save locally the state of an application or the data to be submitted to a server. A comprehensive number of facilities are provided to manage this data.



• Communications management



DataMóvil establishes the connection with the server on a need basis; only when a transmission of data has to be done. The data transmission may be done with strong 128 bits SSL encription. The data transmitted may be compressed in zip format or uncompressed depending upon the DataMovil client configuration. Additionally, the access to web services with SOAP protocol is natively supported.
